ONCE there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. Starting in the 1960's, the books were sold numbered 1-7 in publication order. These books were re-numbered in chronological number - The Magician’s Nephew is a prequel, and The Horse and His Boy takes place during the Pevensie regnal period - in the 1990's to boost sales of Narnia books published after 1953. With The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe remaining a staple of class reading lists, marketers realized they could boost sales of The Magician’s Nephew if readers thought it was required to understand the 1950 classic (it isn't).
